Mabaw Reef is Tagbilaran’s last remaining underwater jewel

There is alot to be learned from local histories, something everyone must always consider and research, research, research.

Say, for instance, the case of the etymology of the Mabaw Reef. We talk about Mabaw Reef, the Tubattaha-like marine protected area (MPA) just off the shores of Taloto/ Ubujan, this city, because,  the Rare Conservation, Inc. – backed Mabaw Reef Pride Campaign that aims to deepen awareness and local pride on the MPA, and particularly, increase active participation of the local folks in the conservation of the Mabaw Reef, was launched earlier today.

The world called, they answered

And now, they’re in Bohol.

Serving for almost a year now with their host organizations in Bohol, Peace Corp Volunteers (PCV) Jessica Miguel, Kate Jaffe, Kristin Kuhn, Todd Massari and Abby Samuelson are not the usual Amerikana/Amerikano you see around town.

They’re the real deal, here to share their skills and knowledge with their host institutions and communities for a two-year volunteer program. The Peace Corps, run by the government of the United States of America, deploys volunteers all over the world with three main goals, one, to provide technical assistance (for social and economic development at the grassroots level of their host countries), two, to help people outside the United States understand U.S. culture, and, three, to help Americans understand the cultures of other countries.

Whose road is it anyway?

For the longest time, we’ve been ranting about the sorry state of our streets, some damning out loud where they can, over the radio, online discussion forums, Facebook, Twitter, what-have-you, some, cursing in silence,  each time they try to swerve away from either those impossibly huge & deep potholes or the just too bleeping many cavities or simply those dirt roads — dirt roads in the city! — that take forever to get rehabilitated. Needless to say, roadtrips in and around Tagbilaran City (but it could easily be the same everywhere in Bohol, really) are no fun.
